Wharf Waste Facilities

The River Thames provides the most sustainable alternative means of transporting construction materials and waste from London.

With this in mind McGrath Group has developed two wharfs at its Barking Facility which are situated just north of the Barking Creek Tidal Barrier where it meets the River Thames, just six miles downstream from Central London, with excellent access to Thames Gateway.

The site contains two wharfs which can accommodate vessels up to 100m in length. The three metre wharfs are licensed by the Department of Transport and the Environment Agency to process non-hazardous and hazardous waste. These are equipped with wholly-owned specialist plant and equipment and operate as part of our Materials Recycling Facility (MRF), where mechanical, magnetic and manual processes are used to separate wastes into individual material streams for recycling. Their location, just six miles from Central London, makes them an ideal destination for wastes generated at Crossrail, the City and Thames Gateway sites, all of which we have provided services to. The wharf provides an excellent alternative to road transport for transporting wastes both from site to the Material Recycling Facility and to their ultimate destination, reducing traffic congestion, fuel consumption and air pollution.

Each journey can replace up to 140-lorry movements, significantly reducing the carbon footprint as well as traffic congestion, pollution and noise on our London roads.
