McGrath Group supports St Patrick’s Day Celebrations
We were proud sponsors of this year’s St Patrick’s Day Special, hosted by the London Irish Centre.
Every year on 17th March , the Irish community around the world comes together to mark St Patrick’s Day. Of course, this year COVID restrictions were in force meaning that the usual parades and celebrations had to be reimagined. Fortunately, The London Irish Centre worked hard to create an online, virtual event under the theme “London Le Chéile” or #LondonTogether, to honour the spirit of culture, creativity and collaboration of the Irish community in London during the challenges presented by Covid.
Live streamed throughout the evening, the event comprised of a host of live performances including storytelling, dance, music, poetry and film provided by Irish artists and well-known personalities such as Dermot O’Leary, Tom Grennan, Maverick Sabre, Imelda May and Angela Scanlon. London Mayor Sadiq Khan also had a special message for the viewers, thanking the Irish community across the capital for “everything they have done to fight the pandemic”, in particular Irish frontline workers and NHS staff who have worked, and continue to work, so hard.
Furthermore, Trafalgar Square, the usual site of the parade and festival, was lit in emerald green and played host to Brian Gillespie who performed a moving contemporary dance piece entitled “Damhsa”. The piece, in collaboration with Rónán Ó Snodaigh, was watched by the 25,000 who streamed the virtual event. Other landmarks to join in on the day include the BT Tower, which was also lit in green and emblazoned with the message “Happy St Patrick’s Day” as well as the hashtag #LondonTogether in recognition of this year’s theme.
The McGrath Group has a strong connection to Ireland, with the founding members, brothers David, Patrick and Michael hailing from Cork and are still very much a part of the community in Greater London.
Managing Director David McGrath commented:
“As sponsors of the event, along with the Irish Embassy, Culture Ireland and Tourism Ireland, it was wonderful to be a part of such a fantastic celebration of the Irish community on St Patrick’s Day and give tribute to Irish frontline workers in London. “
