With more and more furniture shops advertising great deals on new mattresses with messaging that consumers should replace their mattress every 8 years, what then happens to the old ones – can mattresses be recycled?
Recycling mattresses require specialist equipment to process them, therefore not many facilities are able to offer this recycling service.
However, at the McGrath Group’s materials recycling facility (MRF) in Barking, near London, we have the expertise and equipment to recycle mattresses for our clients which include bed manufacturers, removal companies, civic amenity sites and other waste contractors.
The mattresses are processed through our mobile shredders with the springs then sent to a scrap metal recycling partner and the foam and other materials used as Waste to Energy (WtE), a process that takes waste and turns it into a useable form of energy such as electricity, steam and heat through incineration.
